Self Employed Herd Care and Support Assistant (part-time)
This role involves looking after our herd of 5 equines on our 2-acre track system every other weekend with some weekday cover as needed. The basic hours are 5 hours every other week, so flexibility is important.
This is a self-employed role; applicants should already have other self-employed income. A contractor agreement will be provided. Invoices would be submitted weekly, with payment arranged on a weekly basis.
Ethical approach:
We ask everyone working with our horses to follow our ethical code of conduct and to be open to learning and practising our non-aversive approach to horse handling, care and training. This includes the use of positive reinforcement and a calm, respectful way of working with each horse.
The role includes:
· Clearing all old hay from nets and refilling nets
· Topping up water and cleaning water buckets if needed
· Making feeds and giving feeds with supplements
· Poo picking and tidying yard and site.
· Rug changes according to weather and each individual horses needs
· Foot care routine daily
· Grooming where needed
· Treatments where needed
· Exercising horses (non-ridden)
You will be supported by our volunteers and, on occasions, may be asked to lead the shift by guiding volunteers and delegating tasks where needed. A good awareness of health and safety, risk management and calm leadership will be important, and applicants should be comfortable working alone when required.
We will ask you to become familiar with our policies and procedures and to follow them carefully, so that our horses, clients, volunteers and team are supported safely and consistently.
